Introducing the 'Friends'

Friends of the Fusiliers have been around for a long time. For as long as fighting men, and women have committed to a life in which they are willing to lay down their lives for their beliefs and the protection of their loved ones, there have always been those who would support them no matter what the consequences. The modern day Fusilier's Museum in the centre of Bury arose out of a need to protect and preserve the memories of the fighting men of all Britain's Fusilier Regiments, and all of their gallant actions. Home to the XX foot, The Lancashire Fusiliers, Bury is the ideal location for the burgeoning Fusilier collection. Due in no small way to the protection afforded this remarkable collection of artefacts, visual and written archives, by Lieutenant Colonel Mike Glover and his dedicated crew, this is a living collection, stored in trust for the sons and daughters of fighting men and women, whose poetry is not yet written.

The 'Friends of the Fusilier's Museum' was formalised as an organisation in 2006, under the good guidance of Allan Marshall. It arose out of a tradition of reverence for the locale's finest Regiment, The Lancashire Fusiliers. The old Regimental Headquarters at Wellington barracks, on Bolton Road, had been home to the Regimental Museum since the 1930s. It had been created in the hope of preserving their collection of military ephemera, but also to be a place where old soldiers and their families could meet, greet and reminisce in familiar, reassuring surroundings. The new museum is an excellent resource for those researching their family history. It houses, amongst other items, an enviable collection of Victoria Crosses. The 'LF's won more than any other county Regiment in World War One, including the renowned '6 before breakfast at Gallipoli in 1915.

The Fusilier Regiments were amalgamated in the 1960s to form the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, to whose memory the new museum is dedicated. Most recently they have served with distinction in Iraq and Afghanistan, suffering 7 dead and 24 wounded.
